King Dasarath exiled Rama for 14 years from the Kingdom. Rama along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana went to live in forests.
Ravana, the king of Lanka kidnapped Sita and imprisoned her in his palace.
Lord Rama with the help of Hanuman, Bali, and Sugreev attacked Lanka. After a furious battle, Rama freed Sita, by killing Ravana.

Finally, Rama took the throne and Vasishta crowned him as the King of Ayodhya.
The celebration took place on the New moon day of Ashwin. From that day people started the Diwali festival as the most special festival in India.
